JOHN MORROW’S PICK OF THE WEEK
PHOEBE LEDA AND THE TIME LOCKERS
M. G. Hooper
It is 2015 and Phoebe Leda at 14 years old appears to be like any other teenager living in a suburb somewhere in Melbourne. She is starting at a new school tomorrow and is both excited and stressed out. Her best friend, Mim, is trying to comfort her via their webcam. Phoebe has known Mim, a girl from New York, for seven years via the webcam. Mim was a rock when Phoebe’s two brothers died in a car accident two years ago.
Tonight, however, Mim is acting really strangely and asking if her parents have spoken to her and given her a present before her first day at the new school. Phoebe is puzzled and a bit annoyed at Mim’s attitude. At dinner, Phoebe’s mother, Jillian, is also acting strangely, telling her that there is something she must know and should have been told years ago. Jillian chickens out on telling Phoebe her story and decides to wait until early in the morning when her father comes home from work.
In the middle of the night, Phoebe is woken up by a loud pounding, strange thumpings and mysterious lights within the house. Thinking the house is on fire, she rushes to her parents’ aid only to find she can’t open her bedroom door. There are strange voices on the other side, urging her to let them in. Mim is suddenly on the webcam, urging her to use a golden mobile that must be in her room. After locating the mobile, Mim gives Phoebe instructions on how to use the mobile to get her out of the building and into her new school locker.
The race is on, however, as the intruders who caused all the noise and kafuffle have captured Phoebe’s parents and she will need all of Mim’s help, along with the golden mobile, to rescue them.
Wow……..I’ve got to tell you that this novel really caught me up in its storyline from the very beginning. Punchy, mysterious and thrilling, this author has a great imagination and a way with words. As I followed Phoebe’s adventures I found myself quickly absorbed in her plight and couldn’t wait to see what happens next. This is a fantastic novel that will appeal to all ages.
“Phoebe Leda is caught completely off-guard when her parents are taken prisoner and her best friend introduces her to the mysterious workings of a golden mobile – a handy tool that will help her on her exciting adventures.”
